When this Danish science-fiction novel was published, the idea of freezing yourself to attempt life-extension was a novel one. After 50 years, the imagined future progress of medical science has not come to the rescue of these pioneering cryonauts. Bodelson imagined a quite different scenario, where freezing becomes a common place occurrence, changing society in profound ways.
Our protagonist is an editor at a pulp magazine, getting drafts into publication shape, but also coming up with many story ideas of his own, pitching them to other writers, but never actually writing them himself. Unfortunately, he discovers a lump on his neck, which turns out to be an incurable cancer. His doctor offers him a chance at an experimental treatment: his body can be frozen down, in the hopes that future medicine will be able to unfreeze him safely, and cure his disease.
Although hesitant at first, our hero agrees, and finds himself frozen for the next 20 years. s
